What We’ll be Covering in this
Dance Photography & Lighting Workshop
Learn From A Master
Eye catching photographs are a collaboration between the photographer and the subject, whether it’s a dance image, a portrait or a headshot the idea is to capture a person’s likeness, personality and mood. We use lighting to bring atmosphere and mood to our portraits, we use shadows and highlights to help create emotion. We can add form, shape and dynamism to inject energy. This helps us get to know something about the person in the portrait. By observing our subjects’ characteristics, we as photographers can create interesting and exciting imagery. This workshop will help you improve your understanding of lighting and help you create some fabulous photos.
This is a hands-on workshop
With supervision you’ll be asked to place and adjust the studio lights. You’ll be shown how to use a light meter and measure the light.
How to see and read the light
One of the keys to understanding photography is being able to ‘see the light’. It helps to visualise what the light is doing and how it affects the composition. Learning how to recognise a type of light and how to alter it is what will take your photos up to the next level.
Understand light modifiers
Using soft-boxes, snoots, reflectors and umbrellas will change the way light affects your subject. We’ll explore how when and why to use each one for a desired effect.
Multiple light set-ups
Some of the best photographs are taken with one light while others require multiple lights. We’ll cover several set-ups including one, two and three lights.
Lens choice
What lens to choose for portraiture and why some lenses work better than others.
How to direct a model
One thing I’ve noticed when delivering previous workshops is how some photographers aren’t confident when dealing with a model. They’re unsure how to direct them, how to work a pose, what to ask them to do and crucially let them know when they are not delivering what you want. We’ll cover several ways of building your confidence and making your model directions easier. I’ll even give you some insider tips & tricks for better communication.
Learn From A Master
You’ll be able to see how I shoot and frame a subject and watch how I give direction and fine tune the shot.
Image review and coaching
Reviewing my images and your images, this is where we’ll be looking to improve photographs with constructive pointers.
Lighting diagrams
Afterwards you’ll be emailed lighting diagrams and notes for all set-ups with f-stops and distances.
Question time
There’ll be plenty of time to ask questions, listen to and digest the explanations.
What you need to do bring?
lenses/camera etc
A digital (or film) camera with the ability to change aperture and shutter speed, a camera has M mode for manual.
Your camera must have a way to fire a studio flash preferably by hot shoe.
Tripods are not essential but you can bring one along if you prefer.
If you have several lenses, you can bring those along too.
A notepad and pen – though lighting diagrams will be emailed later.
Prior knowledge
An understanding of aperture, shutter speed and ISO would be beneficial.
An open mind and a willingness to learn.
